Two big-time American names, Mature and Welles, couldn't add enough luster to this Italian exploitation film. The plot centers on how the evil and ruthless Tartars fought with the mild Vikings in medieval Russia. Mature leads the Vikings, while Welles is the boss man for the Tartars. Both have a beautiful woman hostage in the encampments. The film doesn't delve into political differences, focusing instead on the battles and a pair of star-crossed lovers, he a Viking, she a Tartar. Plenty of trite fighting with a muddled climax leaves both Mature and Welles dead, the Viking camp in flames, and both sides waling away at each other. The only peaceful moment comes between the pair that has gone away unnoticed, taking to the Volga river for a blissful midday cruise. Plenty of action for voyeurs with the treatment of women hostages, but it's obvious Mature and Welles just needed the money. leave a comment
