A favorite at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival, this gentle romantic comedy about a chubby slacker who's a sex machine to all the chicks is an absolute charmer. Kindergarten teacher Dex (Donal Logue) has no great ambitions, shares a shabby house in Santa Fe with a bunch of other guys and doesn't have dream-date looks on his side. But he's got a surefire system that gets the ladies every time, a philosophy of coolness that distills the essence of such über-Steves as the holy triumverate of Steve Hawaii Five-O McGarrett, Six Million Dollar Man Steve Austin and action star Steve McQueen, the smoothest of them all. Then Dex meets Syd (Greer Goodman) — or rather, meets her again. They knew each other in college, when he was a lean, mean seduction machine and she was a one-night conquest. Now she's in town to design a production for the Santa Fe Opera, and has no intention of falling for Dex again. It's just that there's this little spark between them... The synopsis doesn't sound like much, but the movie's so adorable you don't ever mind that the story's so slight it's in danger of shriveling up and blowing away, or that it drags a little in the middle. And the reason is Logue, an actor who's made some 20 movies in eight years and never really stood out from the crowd of husky guys playing thugs and other guys' pals. Given the spotlight, he's positively radiant; he makes Dex an operator who's not an out-and-out pig, a guy's guy that women like. The movie's a great debut for writer/director Jenniphr Goodman (who co-scripted with her sister Greer and Duncan North, the old roommate whose exploits inspired the character of Dex), a solid gold calling card for Logue and a genuine little gem. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
