On the surface this seems to be a psychological character study. But the characters are never fully developed, and questions about their motivations are never answered. A sleazy bunch of gold-seekers discovers a gold deposit on Indian land. Led by Bridges, they strike a deal with the Indians to mine the gold. But one of the group breaks the Indians' trust, and the Indians go on the warpath against the group. Finally, only Bridges and Windsor are left, and the film ends abruptly without any clues as to what happens to them. This was Elmo Williams' first shot at directing after working as a film editor on such films as HIGH NOON. His work, and the camerawork by Biroc, are better than the slight plot deserves. leave a comment
