Despite an excellent cast headed by such names as Fairbanks and Rathbone, the material handed them here is so wretched they would have been better off staying home and letting some non-actors off the street take over their parts. A very poor piece of British Empire propaganda has Fairbanks and Rathbone as brothers on the coast of Africa fighting against Atwill, a demented munitions baron who has dreams of taking over the world. Atwill's role name, Zurof, is an obvious modification of the name of the infamous munitions dealer Basil Zaharoff, who, in the latter part of the 19th century, supplied guns to both sides in the Boer War. Producer-director Lee blamed the script for the failure of this big-budget epic, which, in truth, resembled a low-budget serial. Critics contended that the fault was Lee's. leave a comment
