Time to take out the handkerchiefs again as Jeanette MacDonald plays a war widow whose recent loss of her son has forced her to a retreat in the backwoods of Georgia. When a boy from the local orphanage (Claude Jarman) comes to help her with chores--accompanied by Lassie--the widow's
motherly instincts resurface. Despite her efforts to remain detached from the youth, she takes in the boy as her own after he narrowly escapes being killed in a fire at the orphanage. A fine cast of character actors adds strong support to this effective blend of drama, comedy, and action.
