Davison is a college student who joins the protest movement because he hopes it will provide him with an in with a girl he is pursuing. Instead he becomes passionately involved in the larger cause, is beaten up, and is even accused of being a communist. Contemporary audiences were shocked by the film's depiction of the violence police use to break up sit-ins and protests. Although its intentions are good, THE STRAWBERRY STATEMENT tries to do too many things at once and fails to make a real statement. Songs include "The Circle Game" (Joni Mitchell, performed by Buffy Sainte-Marie), "Something in the Air" (John Keene, performed by Thunderclap Newman), "Helpless" (Neil Young, performed by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young), "Our House" (Graham Nash, performed by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young), "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" (Stephen Stills, performed by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young), "Long Time Gone" (David Crosby, performed by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young), "The Loner," "Down by the River" (Young, sung by Young), "Give Peace a Chance" (John Lennon, Paul McCartney), Concerto in D Minor (Alessandro Marcello), "Thus Spake Zarathustra" (Richard Strauss). leave a comment
