Down-on-his-luck family man Lovejoy meets up with thief Bridges, and the two stage a series of holdups. They graduate to kidnaping, and Bridges murders the victim, causing a public outcry. Lovejoy decides to implicate Bridges, and both are jailed. A mob of townspeople attacks the jail and
kills the two men. The tightly woven screenplay builds to the traumatic conclusion. The combining of scenes depicting Lovejoy's life before and after his turn to crime makes the outcome particularly hard-hitting. Entire cast are effective in their portrayals, particularly Bridges, as the heartless
crook.
