Jack Oakie stars in this satire of everything from prize-fighting to polo. After suffering a humiliating defeat in the ring, boxer Marco Perkins (Oakie) successfully takes up polo, chiefly because he wants to impress society princess Gloria (Olive Borden), who, however, is merely leading
him on for her own amusement. Once the would-be "social lion" realizes this, he returns to the unrefined ring and to the girl he left behind (Mary Brian). An Oakie formula story, THE SOCIAL LION combines that special touch of pathos within comedy that was the actor's trademark.
