The Smokers: Review
Shoddily written and sensationalistic, this shocker uses the subject of female-on-male rape for sheer shock value while paying lip service to the subject matter of adolescent sexuality and feminism. Three rebellious students at a Midwestern boarding school Jefferson Roth (Dominique Swain), Lisa Stockwell (Keri Lynn Pratt) and Karen Carter (Busy Phillips) treat their elders disrespectfully and prefer their own personal clique to the school's in-crowd. Although privileged Jefferson and Lisa can afford to lose their scholarships, middle-class ringleader Karen can't. But she couldn't stand to have anyone think of her as bourgeois, so the neurotic Karen encourages her pals' anti-social behavior. The school's liberal policies permit boys to hang out on campus; Jefferson's grade-school pal Jeremy (Nicholas M. Loeb) harbors a crush on her, David (Oliver Hudson) is going steady with Lisa and stud-muffin Dan (Ryan Browning) plays the field. During an outing to Chicago, Lisa catches David flirting and Karen sleeps with a married businessman. Karen places irrationally excessive value on this fling, and the situation is made ominous by the fact that during an earlier visit to the Roth family home Karen stole a gun. Feeling that women are at a sexual disadvantage, Karen proposes revenge against unfaithful David, and against in general. She suggests her pals kidnap a man at gunpoint and force him to satisfy them, selecting the unfaithful David as their first victim. Unfortunately, he's too scared to perform for his three masked abductors. That doesn't stop Karen, though; she fancies herself an emancipator. Jefferson tries her hand at date rape, with disastrous consequences: Her intended stud turns out to be gay. Meanwhile, Karen is pushed over the edge by her married lover's rough treatment; will one the teenagers play a fatal shooting game with their next target? Unlike the fantasy revenge drama THREE IN THE ATTIC (1968), this exploitative movie wallows in titillation while pretending to explore adolescent sexual anguish. Sleazy and unsatisfying.
