The Ski Bum

This is an utterly inept variation on a fairly good novel by noted writer Gary. The producers were trying to cash in on the youth market, which was quite lucrative after the success of EASY RIDER. Joseph E. Levine hired some youthful UCLA film school graduates to work on the project, and the results are totally amateurish. King is a ski bum fooling around with married lady Rampling. She gets him a job working at a lodge owned by a stereotyped middle-class family who alienate him no end. The film drones on and on, looking for meaning and finding nothing. The entire structure and plot of Gary's novel was changed for the film, obviously a mistake. Reportedly Peter O'Toole was offered the lead, but he turned it down after the wretched script was revealed. leave a comment
