Real-life New York radio and TV interviewer Olsen plays himself in this CITIZEN KANE-style film tracing the career of Broadway star Donat. She first arrives in New York after winning a faked beauty contest. This wakens her to life's realities, but she carries on. She takes up with
Violette, an actress, and Ramos, a painter. The latter gets her a job as a hatcheck girl. Soon Donat meets Frank, an older gossip columnist who changes her name from the ethnic "Elvira Kowalski" to "Mona Kent." She goes to a party at his home and there takes a swim dressed only in her lingerie.
