The Sicilian: Review
This film should have been titled "Highlights from Michael Cimino's THE SICILIAN" because its production company, Gladden Entertainment, arbitrarily removed more than 30 minutes from the director's original cut. What is left lurches along from scene to scene with little regard for pacing, nuance, or even narrative coherence. Based on the best-selling novel by Mario Puzo, THE SICILIAN tells the story of real-life Sicilian folk hero Salvatore Giuliano (Christopher Lambert), who robs wealthy landowners under the protection of the Mafia and then turns over a third of the proceeds to the peasants, urging them to buy land with the money. Obsessed with his own myth, the bandit fails to realize that his successes are directly attributable to the benign tolerance of all-powerful Mafia don Masino Croce (Joss Ackland). Although the finer points of characterization and plot development are no doubt lying on the cutting room floor, Cimino must take responsibility for some of the most grievous errors in the film--namely the cast, few of whom are Italian. The actors aren't bad; they are simply miscast. However, there are a few exceptional performances. John Turturro is excellent as Giuliano's closest friend and associate, and better yet is Ackland as Don Masino Croce.
