The Shopworn Angel: Review
When happy-go-lucky showgirl Carroll witnesses a parade of soldiers marching off to WW I, she begins to awaken to the seriousness of America's participation in the fight. That night she is involved in a harmless automobile fender-bender with a young Texas soldier, Cooper. The two strike up a friendship and soon Cooper falls in love with Carroll. Carroll, however, is dating a rich man, Lukas, and views her relationship with Cooper as platonic only. Lukas, threatened by the presence of Cooper in Carroll's life, demands the showgirl stop seeing the soldier. Carroll reluctantly agrees. Soon after, Cooper's orders come in and he's to be shipped off to France. Still deeply in love with Carroll and also afraid of the war, Cooper goes to the showgirl and tells her how he feels. Realizing that she loves him as well, Carroll agrees to marry him and they immediately make the arrangements. During the wedding ceremony Carroll is overcome by the thought that Cooper could be killed overseas and faints. The wedding is never completed and Cooper is shipped out on the next boat. Fortified by Carroll's love, Cooper writes his bride-to-be that he now feels he can face any obstacle without fear. Cooper also has had an effect on Carroll, and she decides to shun all her frivolous friends and concentrate on her new chorus job. While rehearsing, she thinks of Cooper in the war and resolves to become a better person in time for his return. Almost entirely a silent film, THE SHOPWORN ANGEL was already in production when the studio decided to try out the new sound techniques on two of their most promising stars, Cooper and Carroll. Both passed the test with flying colors, thus ensuring their transition into a new era. The climax of the film suddenly bursts with sound, allowing Carroll to perform a musical number entitled "A Precious Little Thing Called Love" (Lou Davis, J. Fred Coots). This material was recycled by MGM in 1938 starring Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan and again in 1959 under the title THAT KIND OF WOMAN with Sophia Loren and Tab Hunter.
