Greta Garbo starred in the original film version of this story by W. Somerset Maugham, and MGM should have left well enough alone. This remake is poor, relying solely on the appeal of Parker to attract the audience. She plays a cheating wife who goes with her husband to the remote
countrysides of China to help stop a cholera epidemic. At the start of the film, she is selfish and cold, but in the end, after helping these poor people, she becomes a good, deep-hearted woman capable of great warmth. Unfortunately, it left the audience stone cold.
