Attorney general William and his fiancee, Stanwyck, are secretly married out of state in order to keep their names out of the papers. Upon their return home, they are shocked to learn that Stanwyck's father, Byron, the governor, has been accused of taking a $10,000 bribe from a rich and powerful criminal businessman who was convicted and sent to prison. Byron has recently pardoned the man, and the money appears to have been the motivation, but when the story hit the papers the shady businessman killed himself. Knowing that his marriage to the governor's daughter would bring a public outcry, William keeps it a secret and sets out to investigate the case. Convinced of her father's innocence, Stanwyck aids her husband in uncovering the true facts. Soon impeachment proceedings begin against Byron, and it is a race against time. When Byron's chief investigator is murdered, it appears the culprit is an old girl friend, but Stanwyck finds the real killer and discovers that her father's chief advisor and the dead investigator plotted together. Having cleared her father's name, Stanwyck and William finally find time to announce their marriage. Despite its solid cast, THE SECRET BRIDE is nothing more than a routine programmer with a fairly ludicrous plot. Director Dieterle had taken over the production from director Archie Mayo and finished the film in a workmanlike fashion that kept the pace moving so fast that the audience had no time to question the incongruities. While certainly not a bad film, THE SECRET BRIDE is a disappointment for Stanwyck devotees. leave a comment
