Hudson plots to drive his new wife crazy in order to get his grubby hands on her fortune. He places skulls all around the house, in the hope of sending her back to the mental asylum where she had once been treated. At first the gardener seems to be the culprit, but eventually the finger is
pointed at Hudson. On another level, the old adage "the butler did it" fits here--Nicol, the director, cast himself as the butler.
