This unusual and entertaining film from New Zealand takes place in a small backwoods town in the 1950s, where a number of mysterious events lead to the discovery that an odd man (John Carradine) is a killer, guilty of not just one murder but of a slew of them. Carradine is tremendous as
the weird murderer, a role he obviously enjoyed. The film's attempts at humor are a bit forced and out of place, but strong visuals sustain the suspenseful atmosphere. THE SCARECROW offers further proof that the struggling New Zealnd film industry is worthy of international attention.
