The Saturday Night Kid: Review

This was the second time around for the popular play by Abbott and Weaver. The first, a silent, was made in 1926 and starred Louise Brooks, Lawrence Gray, and Evelyn Brent. This one was released with sound and in a silent version that had titles written by 20-year-old Joseph Mankiewicz. Bow and her sister, Arthur, work as sales clerks in the department store owned by Meyer. Hall also works in the store, and the three of them live at the same rooming house. Another clerk is Harlow, in a small bit before she gained stardom. Arthur has eyes for Hall, who is to marry Bow, and she steals him away by getting Bow in trouble. Arthur is in charge of the store's welfare fund and she uses the money to bet on a losing horse, then she puts the blame on Bow. Bow is a sweet, selfless type and goes to the bookie and gets him into a crap game in which she wins back all the money her sister lost. Bow learns that Hall has sold his prized possession, a radio, to help pay back the money to the employee fund. Bow finally gets disgusted with her sister and tells her off. When Hall learns that Bow is innocent and that Arthur is the conniver, he dumps Arthur and returns to his senses, proposing to Bow. Some very funny scenes, including a rally at the department store where all the employees sing "Hallelujah" to Meyer in a satirical bit aimed at some of the New York department stores. Odd that vamp Bow turned out to be the innocent one while Arthur is the sleazy sister. It might have worked better if they switched roles. A pleasant love comedy, little more. leave a comment
