McCrea is a wealthy California miner based in San Francisco, circa 1856. He's pals with Stevens, a newspaper editor who asks the miner for help in getting rid of Blackmer, an unscrupulous politician. De Carlo, Blackmer's girl friend, ends up falling for McCrea. The film finishes with a
climactic shotgun duel between McCrea and Blackmer as they ride astride their respective horses. This is a routine political melodrama punched up with some fine performances by the leads. The direction is good, with some nicely handled fight sequences.
