Lake and Caulfield are a pair of con artists who take a banker for $25,000. They head out of New York City and cross the border to Canada, but a storm forces them to seek shelter and they end up with Fitzgerald. He introduces them around the little town on the Maine-Canada border and gradually the pair reform their ways. They learn a thing or two about humanity and end up donating their money to various needy people in the town. The film is meant to be a comedy, but the premise is so far-fetched that it doesn't work on any level. There are a few minor laughs, but the picture is permeated with a feeling of unreality that inhibits the players. Fitzgerald, in one of his patented good-natured characterizations, just about carries the film. Direction is credible with standard production values. leave a comment
