An outdoor crime drama that was the final big film directed by Dwan (who made about 400 of them), THE RIVER'S EDGE was shot in Mexico on a generous budget, and the actors made more of the script than was there. Milland is a thief who has just stolen a million dollars and is trying to get out of the US and down to Mexico, where he can spend his ill-gotten gains. In order to do that, he wants to get Quinn, an outdoorsman, to guide him across the border. Quinn is married to Milland's former sweetheart, Paget. As Milland arrives at their mountain ranch, Paget is ready to walk out on Quinn after a huge disagreement. Milland agrees to take her to the nearby town where she can find transportation back whence she came. They drive off but are halted by Gerstle, a border cop. Milland panics, runs the officer down, and Paget attempts to flee, now realizing that Milland is a desperate man. Milland chases after her on foot. Meanwhile, Quinn is in the local sheriff's office when he learns what's happened, as Gerstle tells them in his dying last words. Quinn returns to his ranch, where he finds Milland and Paget. Milland pulls a gun on him and forces the innocent Quinn to show him the way to Mexico. Milland is carrying a small suitcase filled with money, and as they are climbing the side of a mountain, he drops the case and the money flies out. Johnson is a grizzled prospector who is in the wrong place at the wrong time. When he picks up the money, Milland kills him, which makes the point to Quinn and Paget that Milland will stop at nothing and that their lives are in danger. Paget intimates that she would rather be with Milland anyhow (a ploy to take Quinn out of harm's way) and the two exit. Quinn gets a rifle from an Indian village and catches them in the dark, cold woods. They take a respite in a cave as Quinn holds the rifle on Milland. They will freeze if there's no fire, and since the only inflammable material they have is the money, Quinn tries to persuade Milland to set some of it afire. The two men battle; a rattler comes out and is just about ready to bite when Paget kills it. Next day Quinn is hurt in another fight, and Milland goes off alone. Then, with a dumb turn of events, Milland is hit by a truck on a dark mountain road and sent off a high precipice. In the morning, Quinn and Paget are about to go home united when the camera spies some young campers finding the wet money in the river. Milland is dead, and the couple have become closer for their struggle. Excellent cinematography and good locations, but little else. leave a comment
