Though the story is conventional, this silent boxing drama is enlivened by early examples of the directorial flourishes for which writer-director Alfred Hirchcock later became famous. Accompanied by his trainer (Gordon Harker), champion pugilist Bob Corby (Ian Hunter) pays a visit to a circus and falls for the girl (Lilian Hall Davis) manning the ticket window at the boxing booth. Jack Sander (Carl Brisser), the show's big attraction, takes on all comers and flattens them in a single round, hence his nickname, "One Round" Jack. Thinking to score points with the girl, Corby steps into the ring, where it takes him a full four rounds to defeat Sander. Impressed, he offers Sander a gig as his sparring partner. The girl, it ensues, is Sander's wife, but she leaves him after he makes a scene because he spotted her flirting with Corby. The inevitable triangle is resolved at a championship match that pits Colby against Sander. The details of circus and boxing life are well handled, and Hitchcock's camera is startlingly mobile; in one point-of-view shot it gets "knocked out" in the ring. The screen fills with swirling lights, which resolve themselves into a single spotlight as Sander, flat on his back on the floor, regains his senses. By the time the film opened in the US, shorn of almost half an hour of its 100-minute UK running time, Hitchcock was already being hailed as a major filmmaking talent. leave a comment
