Clive and Brent are brothers. The former has been injured and now lies in bed, a hopeless invalid. His wife, Hutchinson, can't live with this and has an affair with Brent. Finally Clive dies, but his nurse (Wood), who secretly loved Clive, suspects that this was a mercy killing. Clive
overacts outrageously in this version of the play by Maugham. The direction gets the story across without much trouble, but adds no insight to a weighty subject. This is a remake of the 1929 film, THE SACRED FLAME.
