Chris (Alan Bates) is a shell-shocked British WW II vet who returns home with no memory of his marriage to Kitty (Julie Christie), a snobbish woman who comes to represent his dissatisfaction with life. Seeing the opportunity to win Chris after years of yearning, Jenny (Ann-Margret) soon
finds herself competing for his affections with Margaret (Glenda Jackson), his childhood flame. Chris, however, finds all of these emotional entanglements difficult to deal with, so he retreats into the past. It's a somewhat slow-moving film, but one filled with touching, genuine performances from
a fine cast.
