The sequel to THE MYSTERIOUS FU MANCHU (1929) begins with an elaborate funeral ceremony for the evil Chinese criminal (played once again by Oland) who had committed suicide in the first movie. Of course, the insidious doctor didn't die at all, but injected himself with a potion of his own design that would only make him appear dead. During the funeral, Oland slips out of his coffin through a trap door and ventures to England in pursuit of his archenemies, Hamilton and Heggie. An elaborate game of cat-and-mouse soon develops between the Britishers and Oland with the villainous genius leaving cleverly murdered corpses in his wake. Eventually Oland is cornered by his enemies and escapes by jumping into the Thames with a bomb of his own making, which explodes, apparently killing him. Sure. Oland would make a cinematic apology to the people of the Far East for his portrayal of the treacherous Asian by starring as an honest and honorable Chinese in the lengthy CHARLIE CHAN series of films. leave a comment
