The Rescue: Review
The setting of THE RESCUE is an American army base in Seoul, South Korea. An American nuclear submarine has gone down and is drifting into North Korean waters. Base commander Admiral Rothman (James Cromwell) sends his top Navy SEALS unit (Charles Haid, Edward Albert, Timothy Carhart, and Michael Gates Phenicie) to destroy the sub and prevent American military technology from falling into the hands of the communists. When the SEALS are captured by the North Koreans, Washington decides it would be politically injudicious to launch Operation Phoenix, a military plan to rescue them. The children of the prisoners (teenagers Kevin Dillon, Christina Harnos, and Ned Vaughn, and 10-year-old Ian Giatti) steal the plans to Operation Phoenix and launch it themselves. From the somber opening crawl to the ridiculous ending, THE RESCUE is one unintentional howl after another. British television director Ferdinand Fairfax is fairly adept at scenes of mayhem, but his direction of actors (mostly from TV themselves) is downright embarrassing, as is the script by Jim and John Thomas. The only actor in the entire film who plays his role the way it should be played--with tongue firmly in cheek--is Marc Price (Skippy from TV's "Family Ties").
