Pidgeon and Lawford play two British officers in Vienna shortly after WW II, where the Soviets are rounding up their refugees to take back to Russia for an unmentionable fate. The other Allied forces agree to aid the Soviets. Ballerina Leigh is a problem; the sweetheart of Lawford, she is also a major figure wanted by the Soviets. Since Pidgeon has agreed to follow all regulations, he delivers the girl only on the promise that she will be treated well. Also included in this anti-communist picture is Barrymore as the mother superior trying to convince Pidgeon of the necessity of organized religion. A weighty script appears to be too much for the players to handle, bogging down the film and making the plot unconvincing. Oscar nominated for Best Art Direction. leave a comment
