Way above the made-for-TV fright-flick average, this creepy-crawler not only raises the hackles but also allows viewers the luxury of bonding with the hero and heroine. Working mom Susan Costello (Madchen Amick) really needs her job as public relations flack and security chief at Manhattan-based Garson's Department Store, since she's the sole support of her young daughter, Amy (Daveigh Chase). But when a customer gets bitten by a rat in a changing room, Susan is torn between serving public safety and protecting the store's reputation. After her superior hires a new exterminator, Jack Carver (Vincent Spano), Susan doesn't see how she can conceal the scary data Jack and his assistant, Ty (Shawn Michael Howard), uncover. Susan also has rat problems on the home front — her apartment is infested and unbeknownst to her, the hungry critters have devoured her janitor. An invasion of rats at a recreation center pool terrifies Amy and convinces Susan to jeopardize her job by cooperating with Jack. The rats turn out to be escapees from an abandoned research facility, experimental vermin that are highly aggression and have a craving for human flesh. Jack's contention that Garson's is the rats' favorite hangout meets a stony reception from the Public Health Department, which fears a city wide panic. While Jack's team investigates the creatures' subterranean escape routes, the rats get spooked and invade a subway train on which Susan and Amy happen to be riding. After this narrow squeak, Jack, Susan, and Ty work round the clock to annihilate the furry gray monsters. Not recommended for rodent-phobics, this horror film makes good use of the image of human beings losing their place at the top of the food chain. The computer-generated rat attacks will leave you sleeping with the lights on. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
