The Queens: Review
This Italian-French production is a series of four short stories filmed by four different directors. They have no real connecting theme other than the titles, which suggest the lead female is a "queen" of sorts. The first episode, entitled "Queen Sabina" and based on a story by Franco Indovina, features Vitti as a young girl hitchhiking home from the beach. Two cars pick her up, and both drivers attempt to rape her. She is picked up a third time by Salerno. In a disgusting suggestion of rape inspiring sexual passion, Vitti feels her hormones acting up and chases Salerno into the woods. Next is "Queen Armenia," a confusing tale featuring Cardinale as a gypsy who takes care of neighbors' children and passes them off as her own to get money and bed partners. Moschin is a doctor who at first repels her advances but finally succumbs. The third story, "Queen Elena," features American star Welch as a young housewife who seduces her neighbor, Sorel, while her husband is away. Sorel, who can't believe his luck, returns home to find his wife (Lindstrom) making love with another man. Finally there is the story of "Queen Marta." Capucine is a housewife who gets drunk and seduces hired butler Sordi. Like the wealthy man in Chaplin's CITY LIGHTS, she completely forgets about the affair the next day and becomes angry when Sordi suggests another night of passion. He decides to play her game (maybe he saw CITY LIGHTS) and patiently waits for his would-be lover to quaff a few more. These stories are really just turgid little melodramas that pretend to have a meaning. As a whole, this film projects a real hatred toward women. They are portrayed as catty, lusty creatures who will do anything for a good roll in the hay. The production values are adequate, though the subtitles have an annoying way of floating around the screen. This film comes off as a witless and boring anthology that's not worth much. Anthology films usually contain at least one good episode, but there's nothing even mildly outstanding here. The four parts were also known as "The Hitchhiker," "The Room with a Juke Box," "The Digestive Tablet," and "Giovanni."
