In THE PURPLE PLAIN, Peck is back in his rightful milieu, cast as a man who is having trouble fighting inner turmoil and just as much difficulty with what's happening around him. Peck had been married to Griffin, but when she dies in a London air raid on their wedding night, he blames himself (this is shown in a flashback to the early years of the war). It's now 1945 and Peck is in Burma, where he is a pilot. (Actually, the picture was shot in Ceylon--now Sri Lanka.) Peck is taking fellow officer Denham to a routine destination, accompanied by his navigator, Brook. Their plane crashes in the jungle and Brook is hurt. They are downed in the heart of Japanese-held territory and their situation is, at best, precarious. Peck is all for waiting at the wreckage, but since they have no water, a precious commodity in the heat of the jungle, they attempt an escape. Peck is a tough type, not given to betraying his feelings, and fills his performance with meaningful expressions rather than dialog. The trek through the jungle is arduous and Denham, who thinks they will never make it and fears being captured by the Japanese, takes his own life, leaving Peck the task of carrying the immobile Brook on his back. Before getting out, Peck meets Burmese beauty Than, and she helps to get him out of his psychological doldrums. The romantic interludes have little to do with the overall style and content of the picture. The screenplay was written by novelist Eric Ambler, author of such books as The Mask of Dimitrios, Journey into Fear, and many others that were made into movies. In a small role, note Brenda de Banzie, who made her mark in THE 39 STEPS, and THE ENTERTAINER. Editor Donner later took up directing and was responsible for THE CARETAKER and WHAT'S NEW PUSSYCAT? among others. leave a comment
