The Princess Comes Across: Review
A deft blend of satire, comedy, and mystery, THE PRINCESS COMES ACROSS had four credited writers working on a screenplay based on material from two other writers. There was reportedly uncredited assistance from Claude Binyon and J.B. Priestley as well, but, happy to say, too many scribes did not spoil the script. Lombard is a Brooklyn actress-chorine who thinks she might be able to further her career by shedding her background for a more exotic identity. She goes to Europe, and comes back on an ocean liner in the guise of a Swedish princess (this has to be a poke at Garbo) interested in becoming a movie star. With her is Skipworth, a pal who pretends to be her lady-in-waiting and who helps in the deception. Lombard meets MacMurray, a bandleader, and his manager-associate, Frawley. While on the ship, Lombard's ruse is spotted by Hall, a guy she knows from Flatbush who says he will expose her charade to everyone unless she comes across with some money. When Hall is killed, suspicion falls on Lombard and MacMurray, as they have already fallen for each other and are a shipboard item. Rumann is a German detective on the ship and he begins to investigate the murder as the boat sails toward New York. He is one of several European cops (including Harte as a Scotland Yard man) on their way to a detective's convention in the US. MacMurray has helped Lombard take Hall's body from her stateroom and put it somewhere else so he is implicated as an accessory after the fact. Rumann gets close to solving the murder but gets rapped on the head before he can divulge the identity of the real killer. MacMurray solves the case, bringing the murderer to justice (it's Dumbrille, but his motivation is muddled). Once that's taken care of, MacMurray agrees to help Lombard in her plan to capture the heart of America with her Swedish background. But when they arrive in New York, Lombard is interviewed on the radio and soon blows her cover by lapsing into pure Brooklynese. "My Concertina" was written by Jack Scholl and Phil Boutelje. Several other songwriters are credited, but their material must have been cut from the final release print, since the Scholl-Boutelje song was the only one heard in its entirety.
