Even the teens at whom this plodding and predictable romantic comedy is clearly aimed are unlikely to be swept away by its contrivances. College senior Paige Morgan (Julia Stiles) is so focused on her goal — getting into Johns Hopkins medical school — that she habitually forgoes such pleasures as dating and partying to crack the books. But intelligence and discipline notwithstanding, Paige is struggling with a mandatory Shakespeare course. And she's mightily unimpressed by attractive new foreign-exchange student Eddie (Luke Mably), though he's smitten with her. Undeterred by their disastrous first encounter, during which he tried unsuccessfully to persuade her to remove her top, Eddie schemes his way into becoming her lab partner. She's annoyed by the fact that he seems more interested in their personal chemistry than the required science experiments, but reluctantly agrees to provide tips on adjusting to American mores in exchange for help with the Bard. Paige's initial dislike of the arrogant Eddie fades and the two opposites naturally attract during a Thanksgiving feast at the Morgan family home. What Paige doesn't realize is that "Eddie" is really Denmark's playboy Prince Edvard, who has not only broken hearts all over the world but also recently cut himself off from his parents and, inspired by a "Wild Girls of Wisconsin" commercial, hoofed it to the Heartland accompanied by his loyal butler (Ben Miller). Before Eddie has the chance to break the news in his own way, a determined group of paparazzi uncovers his whereabouts and he's called back to Denmark. Understandably shocked, Paige struggles to decide whether she should follow her Prince Charming across the globe or focus on her own goals. Since this is a modern fairy tale, everything works out for the best for the couple. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for viewers, who are dragged through their unconvincing and attenuated courtship, which should end shortly after Paige makes her choice but instead continues on long enough to thoroughly wear out its welcome. The usually reliable Stiles seems painfully out of place here, and her valiant attempts to bring some spark to the lifeless script are fruitless. leave a comment --Angel Cohn
