BBC radio journalist and would-be historian James Penfield (Jonathan Pryce) is an unbridled opportunist and self-promoter. He is at work on a book about the 1956 Suez Canal crisis in which his aim is to interpret events in a politically popular manner that will enhance his career. He pursues television-documentary researcher Susan Barrington (Charlie Dore), mainly because her mother (Rosemary Harris) is an expert on Suez. As he gets more involved with these characters and his work, it becomes more difficult to determine just who is using whom.
