In this likable but lamentably average low-budget romantic comedy, Tim Wainwright (Marc McClure) is an insecure loner rapidly approaching the age of 30 who takes out a personal ad in the LA Reader in a desperate attempt to meet a nice girl. He lies about his athletic prowess and cultural interests in the ad and receives dozens of calls that are more scary than intriguing. Just as he is about to give up, he hears from someone who sounds nice, Nancy Bryant (Jennifer Edwards). On their first date, both put on airs for the other and lie about their backgrounds. The relationship starts on its series of ups and downs. Despite some bright moments provided by McClure (Jimmy Olsen of the "Superman" movies) and Edwards (daughter of director Blake Edwards), THE PERFECT MATCH never rises above the level of an average made-for-TV movie. Director Mark Deimel, in his film debut, shows he has a nice flair for casting and light comedy; but this movie is superficial, only mildly entertaining, and instantly forgettable. leave a comment
