The Penalty: Review

Reynolds plays the son of vicious gangster Arnold. The father gets his son involved in a variety of illegal activities, and the young man is even present when Arnold brutally slays an FBI agent and a cab driver. The courts step in and feel Reynolds needs a change of scenery so he is sent off to a farm to live with Barrymore and his family. The country life appeals to him and he reforms under the guidance of the farmer's clan. When Arnold comes to reclaim him, Reynolds chases the gangster away at gunpoint. The violence was pretty graphic for the time, but the competent cast rises above the trite story to make this passably entertaining. Director Bucquet primarily worked on the "Dr. Kildare" films, but he had teamed with producer Chertok early in his career to work on the series of "Crime Does Not Pay" shorts, experience that was put to good use on THE PENALTY. Actor Gene Reynolds in later years became producer of the long-running phenomenally successful TV series M*A*S*H. leave a comment
