A fine entry in the "Sherlock Holmes" series which has Rathbone again cast as the lead and Bruce as his bumbling assistant. They are out to stop Mander and his gruesome aide, Hatton, from stealing a precious pearl. Rathbone surmises that they hid it in one of six busts of Beethoven, and of course he's right. He has to kill Hatton, however, before he can find out for sure. Hatton plays the Oxford Creeper, a monstrous villain who consistently kills by breaking people's backs--always at the third vertebra. In real life, Hatton's looks were just as evil as on the screen. Afflicted with a disfiguring disease known as acromegaly, Hatton gained fame for his portrayal of toughs and became quite successful in Hollywood as a result of this film. Hatton died two years after this picture's release, famous as "the only film star to play monsters without makeup." leave a comment
