PAJAMA GAME, THE
starstarstarstar
A terrific movie comes out of this simple idea: Katie "Babe" Williams (Doris Day) works in a pajama factory. She and her coworkers want a 7.5-cent raise, but management refuses, so she leads a grievance committee and takes their complaints to shop superintendent Sid Sorokin (John Raitt), spoiling the whole movement when she falls in love. Day is an utter delight in the role, funny and intelligent even in pajamas, and the choreography by Bob Fosse is energetic. The dancing isn't just left to the actors, however; the camera moves are carefully planned to give the hoofing the best look possible, and the inventive pans and tracking shots seem wonderfully natural and add to the fun. The camera even serves as an additional dance partner, doing a unique, comic tango with Carol Haney. This is a movie that knows how to move! Codirectors George Abbott and Stanley Donen lift the film from its Broadway roots to produce a cinematic musical that everyone will enjoy, with a smash-hit score. Excellent second banana work from Haney, Eddie Foy, Jr., Barbara Nichols, and Thelma Pelish. leave a comment
