Jonathan Harvey (Paul Kelly) is Lassie's master, a gold miner in the 1870s. His mining partner, Lin Taylor (Bruce Cowling), gets a bad case of gold fever and, because he wants Harvey's share of the gold, tries to arrange his partner's death in such a manner that Lassie will be blamed. It's
up to the canine heroine to avert this disaster and outsmart the villain. The story is played with too much sentiment; nonetheless, THE PAINTED HILLS is a good adventure that's perfect for the kids, with some fine color photography of the picturesque mountain scenery. This was the famous collie's
last film for MGM.
