The Outrage

1964, Movie, NR, 95 mins

Misguided remake of RASHOMON that plays like parody, despite Martin Ritt's direction. Paul Newman acts like a second-rate Cisco Kid, and his portrayal throws the film's delicate balance out of whack. It's the 1870s in the Southwest. Three men meet at a lonely railway station: confidence trickster Edward G. Robinson, preacher William Shatner, and prospector Howard Da Silva. They exhange their views of the recent trial of a Mexican bandit (Newman), who's been sentenced to hang for killing a man (Laurence Harvey) and raping his wife (Claire Bloom). The three witnesses present widely divergent accounts of what happened, which we see, RASHOMON-style, in flashback.
