Lame and inane, but a huge hit in Spain. Emilio's Martinez-Lazaro's musical-comedy follows two Madrid couples as they sneak around with one another's partners, and while this sort of romantic roundelay has served as the premise for countless farces it has rarely felt so tiresome. Pedro (Guillermo Toledo) is completely unaware that his girlfriend, Paula (Natalia Verbeke), has been cheating on him. So he's shocked the day she sits him down in a café and tells him their relationship is over; she's simply fallen in love with someone else and she's leaving for good. Shattered, Pedro turns to his best friend, Javier (Ernesto Alterio), and Javier's girlfriend, Sonia (Paz Vega), for support, not realizing that Javier is actually Paula's mystery man. Javier and Paula had agreed to break the news to their respective lovers, but Paula jumped the gun and now Javier is getting cold feet. Instead of informing Sonia that he's leaving her for her good friend, Javier winds up telling Sonia how much he loves her. As Paula begins to doubt Javier's resolve, Pedro decides to find out who she's been sleeping with and hires a private eye (Ramon Barea). Nervous that he's about to be exposed for the philanderer he is, Javier tries to get Pedro's mind off of Paula by fixing him up with Pilar (Maria Esteve), a cute but compulsively chatty colleague. Sonia, meanwhile, has taken a romantic interest in the wounded Pedro, and Javier becomes suspicious that he's being cuckolded by Sonia's gay friend, Lucia (Nathalie Poza). Sonia couldn't possibly be sleeping with his best friend, could she? The only way for fluff like this to work is if the players are so endearing you don't really mind how silly their romantic entanglements become. But there's precious little to like here. Javier is not only a homophobic cheat, but a callow liar and a cheapskate to boot. And while the women are marginally smarter than the men, the men drag them down to their level. The film is indeed a musical and characters do break out in song, but these interludes offer little relief. The lyrics are about as thin as the film's vacuous pillow talk, and the strip-club style choreography is perfectly suited to its smutty attitude.
