Using WW II as a backdrop, Beck plays an American pilot who falls in love with a young French girl, Pisier. When the time comes for him to return to the States, he promises her that he will return in three weeks to marry her. She waits for the appropriate date, but Beck never shows. Heartbroken, she aborts the baby she has been carrying and decides that men are to be used for personal gain. She becomes a great French actress and marries a Greek tycoon, Vallone. But over the years she has also been keeping tabs on Beck, his disastrous career as a commercial pilot, and his shaky marriage to Sarandon. Eventually, she arranges for Beck to come to Greece to be her personal pilot. He fails to recognize her, so she makes his life miserable. When he finally realizes that she is the young Parisian girl he loved, they are reunited again as lovers. Sarandon becomes a problem for the pair, however, because she won't grant Beck a divorce. They plot her murder, and when she overhears, she rushes out to the boat docked behind their apartment and is swept out to sea. With circumstantial evidence, Beck and Pisier are charged with her murder. Vallone convinces them to plead guilty in the hopes that they'll get a lighter sentence, but the judge views them as cold, unrepentant murderers and gives them the death penalty. The picture concludes with Beck and Pisier being put to death and Vallone, who has had the last laugh as the jilted husband, visiting Sarandon at a convent where she has been cared for since the nuns found her adrift at sea. The costume design reveived an Oscar nomination. leave a comment
