Set in the 1950s, THE ONE AND ONLY is the entertaining story of a would-be Broadway star who ends up doing his acting in the wrestling ring. Winkler, an obnoxious young cad who wants to make it big in show business, woos and wins Darby, despite the lack of respect he shows her parents. After marrying, the two are off to New York, where Winkler's attempts to make it in the biz lead only to a gig as a carnival wrestler. Then promoter Saks gets behind him, and after trying out a number of ring personas, Winkler finally dons a blond wig and becomes a professional wrestling star as the Lover. Director Carl Reiner gives his subject the human touch, and Winkler does a nice job of finding the humor in his mostly loathesome character. leave a comment
