A psychological whodunit that has the main character struggle more with himself than with finding a murderer. An industrial chemical accident leaves Mills with a severe brain injury and inclinations toward suicide after a friend's child is killed in the accident. With his release from the hospital, Mills goes to live in a suburban hotel which contains people from all walks of life. One of them is Molly, a struggling fashion model played by Walsh. She is being pursued by the lecherous Chapman, who figures that if he pays her rent it entitles him to go to bed with her. She and Mills have only crossed paths once in the hotel, but she borrows money from him to pay her rent and the next day is found dead. Mills, because of his history, becomes a prime suspect and can't even figure out himself if he did it. It becomes a matter of him keeping hold of himself while seeking the real killer. The film is deep in the Hitchcock vein, but that's because it was directed by Baker, a one-time Hitchcock assistant. A very nicely handled, well-shot drama, with a sterling cast of familiar British actors all contributing fine performances. leave a comment
