To help out Zegarac, a 17-year-old Jew, Tatic arranges a marriage for her and his son, Dvornik. Since the boy has been raised a Catholic, this marriage of convenience will protect Zegarac from the Nazis. Dvornik rebels at first and is ostracized by his friends and former girl friend.
