The overly imaginative Spin Evans (Jeremy Foley) aggravates his parents by accusing their neighbors, the Markhams, of being saboteurs. Meanwhile, socially backward Marty Markham (David Gallagher) begs his departing parents to take him along to Paris. Instead, his mother proposes a deal: Make one new friend and you can avoid vacationing at a dude ranch. Desperate, Marty curries Spin's favor despite disliking his boisterous activities. However, when sinister mortician Hulka (Judd Nelson) and his mysterious wife (Yancy Butler) move into their building, Marty willingly joins in Spin's surveillance. First, they spot Hulka with a dead ringer for his wife; then, they catch Mrs. Hulka with a private eye. Could Hulka be planning to dispatch his spouse? Unable to convince any grown-ups of Hulka's intentions, the boys sneak off to his deluxe funeral parlor. Can they crack the mystery before Mr. Hulka gives them a one-time tour of his crematorium? Hoping to appeal to children and aging Baby Boomers alike, this update of the 1950's kiddie series misapplies James Bond-style intrigue and private eye parody to a preteen universe. Played with regrettable charmlessness by the two leads, these juvenile sleuths use laptops and roller blade, but they inhabit a curiously passe entertainment landscape that no amount of gadgetry can reinvigorate. Only the most unsophisticated children — are there any left? — will enjoy their comic spyjinks unreservedly. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
