Set in his ways, stoic farmer Tony Egan (Donal McCann) learns of the death of his estranged sister Karen, who's spent the past several decades in America. Honoring her deathbed wish, Tony agrees to raise her teenage son Chad (Hill Harper) but is shocked to learn that he's half African-American. Years before, Tony had squelched Karen's affair with the love-of-her-life Joe Brady (Pierce Brosnan). As history repeats itself, Chad promptly falls for Brady's daughter Aislin (Aislin Mc Guckin). When Joe and Tony join forces to stifle Aislin and Chad's interracial romance, Chad resolves to turn his back on his Irish clan altogether. Before departing, however, he visits Joe and hands him Karen's love letters, which Tony had intercepted long ago. Can hypocritical Tony make amends? Can a Yankee homey and Irish colleen find happiness in a town with long memories? The setting of this Irish yarn is a mistily atmospheric coastal town whose isolated location mirrors the insularity of its residents. Fortunately, the picturesque landscape doesn't overwhelm the mise en scene, but actually seems to be one of the characters. On a less fortunate note, we've seen it all before: forbidden romance against a picturesque backdrop; familial enmity carried over to the next generation; and the heart-stopping revelation of a secret. Unable to freshen up the storyline entirely, the screenwriters shrewdly concentrate on the residual damage that overprotective Tony has wrought, including the pain he's caused himself. Further bolstered by subdued performances, this meticulously directed drama reverberates with the sad refrain of missed opportunities. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
