THE MONSTER WALKS is an Old Dark House mystery, made after the commercial successes of DRACULA (1931) and FRANKENSTEIN (1931). Its plot is much indebted to THE CAT AND THE CANARY (1927). Ruth (Vera Reynolds) inherits her father's estate (including the ape he kept for experiments), but her evil, paralyzed Uncle Robert (Sheldon Lewis) wants her killed so he can have the fortune for himself. He gets Hanns (Mischa Auer), the housekeeper's moronic son, to kill Ruth and make it look like the ape did it, but the confused boy kills his own mother instead. Hanns, upset that Robert's orders have caused him to kill his mom, is determined to get revenge on both Robert and Ruth. This is a really strange bit of Poverty Row horror, effectively spiced up with some nice German-style expressionism and a bit of camp bizarreness in which heroine Reynolds is strapped to a column while Auer whips the " gorilla" (really a chimpanzee) into a frenzy.
