In 1943 the Nazi government, desperate for soldiers, began raiding prisons for recruits. THE MISFIT BRIGADE recounts the exploits of a brigade of such ex-cons attached to a panzer division, with their crimes ranging from bigamy to desertion to Marxism. None of the group is much enamored of Hitler, but they find fighting preferable to prison. They enjoy boozing, brawling, and generally raising hell until Col. von Weisshagen (David Carradine) sends them to the Russian front and assigns them to blow up a train in the Russian village of Dankau. To their objection that this is a suicide mission, the colonel promises they will be permanently transferred from the front and given long leaves if they succeed. So they head off for Dankau, where eventually they do the job. Back in Germany, at an airbase ceremony where they and von Weisshagen are to be honored for their feat by a general (Oliver Reed), they find that von Weisshagen is set to renege on his pledge. As Allied fighters strafe the base, the two officers head for a plane to fly them out. But their pilot is gone, and they find themselves surrounded by the armed members of the brigade at the fadeout. Though the brigade's assignment is supposed to be a suicide mission, there's no sense of tension or danger and it all seems pretty easy. The cast, however, is excellent. David Patrick Kelly, Bruce Davison, Jay O. Sanders, and the other misfits are all properly cynical; Carradine is terrific as the arrogant colonel. Director Gordon Hessler previously specialized in martial arts films. leave a comment
