Lovingly acted and supremely well-intentioned, this weepie based on Rodman Philbrick's acclaimed young-adults novel will struggle to find the suitable audience for its sweet but downbeat story. For hulking and uncommunicative Max (Elden Henson), life has been a series of bleak occurrences. For starters, his mother's dead and his dad's in jail, he's flunked 7th grade twice and lives with grandparents Gram and Grim (Gena Rowlands, Harry Dean Stanton) in a shabby row house in Cincinnati, in the basement no less. But this being an inspirational movie, you just know Max's life will take a turn for the better when the brainy but physically challenged Kevin (Kieran Culkin) and his mother Gwen (Sharon Stone) move in next door. Kevin is assigned to tutor the learning-disabled Max in reading, and to that end introduces him to the legend of King Arthur. The two outcasts discover that if Kevin perches on Max's shoulders, they merge their complimentary assets: a strong body and an exceptional brain. They dub this wily and formidable hybrid Freak the Mighty (the title of Philbrick's book) and gallivant around Cincinnati being good citizens, modeling themselves on the knights of the round table. One adventure has them rubbing noses with the slatternly Loretta (Gillian Anderson) who lives in a dilapidated housing project with Iggy (Meat Loaf), who happens to know Max's father from prison. The various eleventh-hour plot twists seem contrived to generate artificial suspense and thrills undermine Chelsom's compassionate if workmanlike direction, as does the banal score. leave a comment --Sandra Contreras
