Fifteen years after starring in THE CHAMP, Wallace Beery took on the role of another down-and-out boxer, here playing Roy "Slag" McGurk, an ex-champion employed by a despicable tavern owner (Edward Arnold) bent on evicting the Salvation Army from its Bowery home so that he can expand his operation. McGurk takes in a young English lad (Dean Stockwell), hoping that the boy's rich uncle will reward him, but--swayed by the boy and a Salvation Army leader (Cameron Mitchell)--the former champ sets aside his selfish ambitions and uses his once-famous fists to keep the wolves from the Army's door. More than a little sappy, this melodrama set in the 1890s presents Beery in his usual role as the lovable slob. You'll find that 1931 classic a much more satisfying experience. leave a comment
